What's the right lamp temperature for you? |
Understanding Kelvin ratings is key to make the right choice. |
Color is very subjective and lamp manufacturers have an increasing number of choices so you can get the correct color temperature for your store, office, or building. It's a very important tool to convey the right image you want to project in your space as well as if the color choice adds or takes away from your design objectives. A number of key factors come into play such as the dominate colors in your space, the type of space involved, activities being done there and more. Take a look at the below chart...
Shades of white light are measured in degrees Kelvin, where lower degrees indicate warmer light and higher degrees indicate whiter or bluish white light. 2700 degrees is usually the warmest white option that most closely resembles a standard incandescent or halogen lamp. The warm color lamps are used in areas such as home and warm tone shopping areas. 3500 - 4100 Kelvin is a whiter light and most often used in offices, work areas, and some stores. 3500 K has gotten popular for many retail spaces as it is right in the middle; however some stores go even brighter. 5000 Kelvin and up lamps are recommended for reading areas, craft rooms, color matching and is an even bluer white light that most closely approximates and outdoor sky. The staff at Rumsey Lighting Systems has many years of experience working with customers to select the best color lamp for you. By using the proper lamp, you can have a major positive affect on your space, building, store, employees, and even sales. The same is also true on the downside if you employ the wrong color as it is a key factor in your lighting design. Contact us for help on any project or application. Why guess at this? The assistance is free as well as competent, and nothing makes us happier than to see a well lit space for a pleased customer. |

What does Coefficient of Utilization Mean? |
This is the percentage of lamp lumens that reaches the work plane. The CU depends on the fixture efficiency, room reflectances and room shape. A typical CU is 50% to 70%; however many newer fixtures are much more efficient. You can ask us if you ever need help to select an effcient fixture. |

Build a Better Bulb for a $10 Million Prize |
The ubiquitous but highly inefficient 60 watt light bulb badly needs a makeover. And it could be worth millions in government prize money - and more in government contracts - to the first company that figures out how to do it best.
Right now, that company could be Philips, the Dutch electronics giant. Philips announced last week it has submitted the first entry for the L Prize, and Energy Department contest that will award up to $10 million to the first person or group to create a new energy - sipping version of the most popular type of light bulb used in America. We will keep you posted who the contest winner is in a future edition of Light Flashes. You can read more about the contest and prize at http://www.lightingprize.org |
